Dear Neighbor,
Imagine this: You arrive home one night from work, and begin to start dinner. You put your food on the stove, and the phone rings. After a quick conversation, you turn back to your stove and see a fire has ignited a pot holder you had too close to the flame, and the fire appears to be extending up the wall. You quickly get out of your house, and rush to a neighbor’s home to dial 911. Within minutes, the West Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department shows up, extinguishes the fire, and clears the smoke from your home. With nothing lost but your dinner and a few cooking accessories, you may feel a little embarrassed, but you consider yourself lucky!
This scenario and other calls for assistance like it played out 357 times in 2006 for the members of the West Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department. Most of these were thankfully either false alarms or minor incidences, but each was dealt with professionally by the department while providing the residents of West Caldwell with the fire protection they have come to expect and deserve. Responding in the middle of the night or during dinner, postponing errands and sometimes having entire nights or days spent at incidents, our members selflessly give of themselves 24 x 7, 365 days a year.
The West Caldwell Volunteer Firemen’s Association is the support organization for the Fire Department membership. It covers a wide spectrum of services for both Firefighter and community such as providing exercise equipment that the members to use to stay fit or providing refreshments after major fires and the numerous training drills and meetings during the year.
Fire Safety remains our most paramount service to the people of West Caldwell. Not only through the distribution of literature and pamphlets, but by sponsoring our Future Firefighters Day and other events throughout the year. I ask that you please take a few minutes to review the enclosed brochure that not only gives you some fire safety tips, but also a little more information about the fire department and those who serve you.
As the President of the Association and on behalf of the members we ask you to please renew your support for the members by making a donation using the donation slip below and the return envelope included. Even the smallest donation goes a long way in helping our membership continue to serve you, our neighbors.
Thank you and Happy New Year!
Sincerely,
R. Karl Otterbein
President, West Caldwell Volunteer Firemen’s Association
